Back story : there's a woman who knows
ben (
erin's boyfriend). She is a therapist on the west coast writing a children's book - one of the characters is an anxious turtle, wearing a swimsuit, of course. I'm struggling trying to (visually) develop his character, and these are my rough first sketches from last night. First of all, I'd LOOOOOVE feedback, artistically. Second of all, I'll be asking the author these questions, as well, but here are my main unknowns :
1. Is his shell supposed to look like a backpack? Because with a kid, you expect that. But if his whole body is supposed to fit inside, that could be a problem.
2. How do I make swim trunks look like swimwear, not boxers?
3. Do turtles (specifically this one..) have hands? fingers?
4. Toes?
5. What does anxious look like vs. sad or sullen?
Help! :)
Hey Kelly, to help with your swimwear issues, try adding a tie string on the waistband and see how it looks.
ReplyDeleteMaybe anxious should look more tense (less slouched)...with wide eyes and raised eyebrows.
ReplyDeletehe does look a little sad. for the swimsuit, maybe add some hawaian print or something, I agree with the drawstring, i bet that would help. and i like him with arms for what it is worth.
ReplyDeletethanks for all of the comments! definitely good feedback - the woman authoring the book just wrote back and mentioned he's about 10 years old, thankfully- that's about what I had in mind :) now to work on his attire and expression...and limbs... and shell...
ReplyDeleteThe guy on the far right definitely looks anxious (good work!), but he also looks a little like his feet got cut off. Prefer the limbs on the 2nd and 3rd sketches. And I agree, maybe a drawstring, pattern, or white trim on the edges would make it look more like swim trunks. Looking good though!!!
ReplyDeletebtw... this is Lynsey. I have no idea why my google log-in is "Prague Adventures."
ReplyDeleteKelley---I like you're revised versions, but I also just LOVE the one on the far right. He's PERFECT in my book!
